The complete guide to CBD dosage.
One of the most asked questions around CBD usage is how much CBD should you take to feel the full effects without any of the side effects. CBD can be somewhat confusing, especially since it’s so new and can have a different effect depending on each end user.
To make matters more confusing, there are several different ways to take CBD which further complicates the question about correct dosage amount for you. So in this article, we’ll explain exactly what CBD is, how it works in your body, and give you some recommendations on dosage amount for the most popular CBD methods.
Before we dive into all that, let’s first review exactly what CBD is and how it affects your body.
What is CBD and how does it work?
CBD stands for cannabidiol — and it’s the second most prevalent active ingredients found in the cannabis plant. CBD is just one of over 80 natural compounds found in the cannabis plant.
CBD works by interacting with our endocannabinoid system (ECS). Our endocannabinoid system is a vast internal system of controls that helps regulate important daily functions such as your sleep, mood, and appetite.
CBD helps to stimulate receptors in the endocannabinoid system, which helps your body create its own endocannabinoids. If you’ve ever experienced a runner’s high, you’ve felt the effects of endocannabinoids in action!
Many CBD users report that CBD has a relaxing and calming effect on them that makes life more enjoyable.
There are several different internal factors into how CBD affects you such as your weight, age, metabolism as well as external factors such as your method for consuming CBD and how often you use CBD.
Let’s first talk about the most common types of delivery methods for CBD…
Which delivery method is best for you?
There is no shortage of different ways to consume CBD. For simplicity’s sake, we’re going to focus on the most popular methods which include vaping, capsules, oil drops, topicals, and edibles.
Each of the different delivery methods interact with your body in different ways. Some methods will work almost instantly, but won’t last as long as other methods. And other methods can take up to an hour for you to feel the effects, but can last for several hours.
Not to mention that some methods will be easier to control your dosage levels while others will be a bit more difficult to gauge. Click here to learn more about how to take each delivery method.
We’ll touch on each of these for the most popular delivery methods as well as mention which situations call for one delivery method over another.
Vaping is one of the most popular ways to consume CBD for several reasons. It’s one of the easiest ways to consume CBD and works almost instantly. And, there are a variety of flavors to choose from.
Vaping is best for high-stress situations where you need to relax immediately and discretely such as Black Friday shopping or while you’re sitting in traffic. Vaping tends to attract a younger audience while older audiences tend to prefer capsules, drops, or topicals.
Vaping is also a great way to experiment with how much CBD you need. It’s not as accurate as capsules, but it offers a lot more flexibility for experimentation purposes.
At Farmacy Bliss, our vape pens contain 350 mg of CBD, which is about 250 puffs per pen.
As with all CBD, we recommend you to start slow and work your way up. That being said, our suggested use for our CBD vape pens is up to 3 four-second puffs per sitting. And again, feel free to adjust based on how much CBD you need.
Capsules are another popular way to consume CBD, especially with older audiences who want to feel the benefits of CBD all day.
Capsules are great for experimenting with dosage levels because they’re the most accurate way to know how many mg you’re consuming. However, they don’t offer as much flexibility with dosage amounts as vape pens or oil drops.
Softgel capsules are best for those who need all-day comfort and relief. You will typically feel the effects from capsules longer than most other types of CBD. And since they’re subtle and discreet you can bring them anywhere. However, it can take up to an hour for the effects of CBD to kick in, so plan accordingly.
At Farmacy Bliss, we make our softgel capsules with 30 mg of CBD. You can choose to buy a sampler pack (containing 4 pills), a mini bottle (containing 15 pills), or a full-sized bottle (containing 30 pills). You can also buy them in bulk (two or three bottles at a time) for additional savings.
Again, we recommend you to start slow and work your way up. With that said, our suggested use for our CBD softgel capsules is one softgel, 1-2 times per day depending on your pain and discomfort levels. It’s best to take the softgel on an empty stomach about 20-30 minutes before food.
We also encourage you to consult with your healthcare professional about how much and how often you should take CBD.
Another popular way to consume CBD is with oil drops. Oil drops are popular because you can simply add a drop under your tongue or add it to your favorite beverage or breakfast smoothie.
Drops offer a little more flexibility than capsules, but similar to vaping it’s also a little more difficult to predict with accuracy how many mg you’ve consumed.
Drops are for those who want to have a little more flexibility over their CBD intake, but either can’t vape or don’t want to vape CBD. Drops are a convenient alternative to vaping since it usually only takes about 15 minutes to feel the effects. However, oil drops do not last quite as long as capsules.
Again, we recommend you to start slow and work your way up. With that said, our suggested use for our CBD drops is either one half or full dropper once per day or as recommended by your healthcare professional. If you’re a new user, you should start with half a dropper or less to see how it interacts with your body.
Each dropper contains roughly 50mg of CBD, making it one of the most potent delivery methods we offer at Farmacy Bliss.
Topicals are another popular way to use CBD. Topicals usually come in the form of creams and lotions.
Topicals are great for applying CBD to a specific area of your body (and are usually used for dealing with external pain). However, the nature of lotions and other topicals make it difficult, if not downright impossible, to determine dosage levels.
And since we don’t currently offer any topical CBD products at Farmacy Bliss, we can’t give a suggested usage amount as the total mg will vary from product to product and from brand to brand.
But as with any other CBD delivery method, it’s best to start slow, monitor how your body feels, and work your way up. And be sure to always consult with your healthcare professional beforehand.
Further down in the article, we have some more general guidelines on CBD dosage amounts that might provide some clarity if you’re sold on CBD topicals.
Edibles come in many shapes, sizes, and, you guessed it, dosage amounts!
Gummies and candies are the most popular forms of edibles and are typically between 5-20mg per candy, which makes them pretty easy to experiment with dosage amounts.
However, keep in mind that your body will interact with the CBD differently when you eat it compared to other delivery methods such as vaping or using a capsule pill.
And again, since we don’t currently offer edible CBD products at Farmacy Bliss, it’s impossible for us to give a suggested usage amount. Just make sure that you’re reading the labels and know how many mg of CBD you’re consuming in one sitting.
Keep scrolling down for some general guidelines on CBD dosage amounts that might be able to provide more clarity on CBD edibles.
Choosing your CBD dosage
Whether you’re brand-spanking-new to CBD or if you’re buying a CBD product without a suggested usage amount, here are some things to consider when determining your CBD dosage.
1. Estimate dosage level based on body weight
As with anything else, the more you weigh, the more CBD you need to consume to start to feel the effects. A good rule of thumb is to take 1-6mg of CBD per every 10 pounds of body weight, depending on how much relief you need. (If you need a little bit of relief, only take 1mg per 10 body pounds. If you need a lot of relief, take 6mg per 10 body pounds.)
Here’s a graphical representation of a dosage calculator from our friends at Honest Marijuana:
2. Start small and work your way up
Besides the general guidelines based on your body weight, you need to experiment with different dosage levels as well.
CBD interacts with everyone in an individual way, so 20mg of CBD might be enough for your friend who weighs the same as you, but you might only need 10mg of CBD to feel the effects. Not to mention how different delivery methods can skew these numbers one way or the other.
That’s why we encourage all CBD users, both newbies and seasoned pros, to start small and work their way up to higher dosage amounts, if needed.
And remember the goal here is to provide the most amount of comfort with the smallest amount of mg. It’s best to keep a notebook to keep track of how different dosage levels affected you while you go through your experimentation phase.
3. Consult your doctor or healthcare professional
When in doubt, ask your doctor or healthcare professional! This is especially true if you have a medical condition or are currently taking medications — as medications can interfere with how CBD interacts with your body.
Can you take too much CBD?
By now, you’re just about a CBD dosage expert. But let’s talk about the elephant in the room:
Can you take too much CBD?
Technically speaking, it’s not possible to overdose on CBD. However, if you take too much CBD you might start to feel more of the minor, negative side effects that come from CBD use.
Now to be clear, in a world where most medicines and medications come with side effects that are actually worse than the initial problem, CBD is light years ahead. However, that’s not to say that CBD comes without any side effects at all.
Here are the most common negative side effects of CBD:
- Fatigue & drowsiness
- Changes in appetite
- Changes in weight
- Dry mouth
It’s reasonable to assume that you increase your risk of experiencing one of the above side effects the more CBD you consume in one sitting.
That’s why we always recommend starting with a low dosage and slowly working up to your optimal dosage amount.
And remember: you can also consult your healthcare professional about any questions you have about CBD or CBD dosage levels. Even if they aren’t familiar with CBD, they know your body better than anyone else and can provide you with educated estimates.
